Linden – Raymond Eugene “Gene” Payne, 65, a farmer on Rt 6, Crawfordsville died in Home Hospital, Lafayette, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. He had been in failing health three years but a patient in the hospital only five hours.  A resident of Montgomery County 49 years, he was born in Meade County, Ky and was married to Fern Brunton in Lafayette in 1927. He was a member of Youngs Chapel Christian Church and member of its board for six years and member of New Richmond Masonic Lodge 604 and Order of Eastern Star Chapter 377.  Surviving with the widow are a son, Frederick Payne of New Richmond; a daughter, Mrs. Paul Janssen of Waynetown; three brothers, Verlin of Romney, John of Vine Grove, Ky and Alex of West Point, and a sister, Mrs. Fannie Logsdon of Stockwell.  -- kbz

Eugene "Gene" Payne, a Montgomery County farmer for 49 years, died at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Home Hospital in Lafayette. He had been in failing health for the past three years and was admitted to the hospital five hours before his death. Born Feb. 23, 1903, the son of William and Lou Payne in Meade County, Ky. He received his education in the Kentucky schools. He was married Feb. 3, 1927 to Fern Brunton. He was a member of the Youngs Chapel Christian Church and served on the board for six years, the New Richmond Masonic Lodge No. 604, and the OES No. 377. Survivors include the wife; a son, Frederick of New Richmond; a daughter, Mrs. Paul Janssen of Waynetown; six grandchildren; three brothers, Verlin of Romney, John of Vine Grove, Ky., and Alex of West Point; a sister, Mrs. Fannie Logston of Stockwell, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by five brothers. Services will be held Sunday, June 23 at 2 p.m. at the Helms Funeral Home in Linden with Rev. Glenn McFarland officiating. Interment will be in Memory Garden in Lafayette. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Masonic services will be held at 8 p.m. Saturday evening. jlr
